The 2018 Dissident Arts Festival—our thirteenth!—begins a new direction for our programming. As of this year, the Festival will function as a fundraising vehicle for relevant progressive causes.
Day 1 is dubbed CABARET OF DISSENT, dedicated to the fight against fascism through the decades. Produced in partnership with the Rosenberg Fund for Children this year, all of the event proceeds will serve as a benefit to this wonderful organization which offers financial and community support to the children of political prisoners. Guest speakers will include RFC leadership—family members of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg as well as Abel Meeropol, poet and composer of “Strange Fruit”.
An array of revolutionary musicians and poets will be featured performers:
-BEYOND GROUP w CHERYL PYLE, JUDI SILVANO, LARRY ROLAND
-CHRIS FORBES’ HARMOLODIC WEILL SONGSPIEL
-THE RED MICROPHONE’S BRECHT/EISLER CONSPIRACY
-Bassist & Poet LARRY ROLAND
-Poets RAYMOND NAT TURNER & ZIGI LOWENBERG
-LINDSEY WILSON & THE HUMAN HEARTS TRIO
....and more—-watch this space for updates
The statements by artists and speakers alike will be decidedly Left and loud, with messages for organizing against the hateful, divisive “new normal” of Trumpolitik. We are particularly excited to bring the Festival to the newly renovated @17frost Theatre of the Arts in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
—DAY 2 will be a Benefit for a pair of vital organizations on the forefront of prison reform, the Alliance of Families for Justice and the NYC Jericho Project. Our theme will simply be LIBERATION and performers include:
-Celebrated jazz drummer WILLIAM HOOKER in a solo performance
-Pianist/Composer TRUDY SILVER premiering a new work
-RAS MOSHE’s Music Now!
-Rad spoken word and music duo JOHN PIETARO & LAURIE TOWERS
-Singer-Songwriter MARTINA FISEROVA
And more
